1. Locks #

Quests can be made accessible only when certain conditions are met, which adds layers of complexity and achievement to gameplay. There are two primary methods of locking a quest, with customizable visibility settings that contribute to the game’s narrative and player engagement:

a. Conditional Locks #

Conditional locks not only gate content but also create a sense of progression and anticipation for the player. As players meet the various prerequisites, they feel a sense of accomplishment that motivates further exploration and interaction with the game world.

Using conditional statements, creators can set up a series of prerequisites for unlocking a quest. These include:

  • Date Restrictions:
    • Lock Until Date: The quest remains locked until a specified calendar date.
    • Lock After Date: The quest is available until a specified calendar date, after which it locks.
  • Inventory-Based Restrictions:
    • Item Possession: The quest requires the player to have a specific item in their inventory.
  • Loot Level Restrictions:

b. Scheduled Access #

Scheduled access locks help simulate real-time events and can align with real-world dates, making the gameplay experience more immersive. It can also encourage players to log in regularly to check for new quests, increasing player engagement.

Quests can be set to unlock automatically during specific time frames, such as:

  • During Certain Class Periods: For instance, the start or end of a class.
  • On Specific Days: Such as weekends or special event days.

Visibility Settings when Locked #

The visibility settings of locked quests can have a significant impact on gameplay by shaping how players interact with the quest system:

  • Title and Messages: Showing the title and lock messages can motivate players to meet the unlocking conditions, enhancing the sense of progression and achievement.

A couple of common ways to use passwords:

  • Discover the Password: Within the context of another quest or through problem-solving activities.
  • Obtain from Instructor: As part of class participation or upon completion of certain tasks.

3. Pay to Play #

The Pay to Play mechanism simulates economic decisions within the game, encouraging players to manage their resources wisely. It adds a strategic layer to gameplay as players must decide which quests are worth their resources, and when to invest in unlocking particular content.

This feature demands players to expend resources to access the quest:

  • Loot Expenditure: Players must pay with in-game currency like gold or other forms of loot.
  • Inventory Item Sacrifice: Certain quests might require a specific “key” item that can be obtained through:
    • Completion of Other Quests: As a reward for achieving certain milestones.
    • Bonus Loot: Randomly awarded for participation or during special events.
