Welcome

Hi, I’m Mick. I’m a high school teacher in San Diego, and my co-founder Mike and I built Gameful to help students explore, create, and take ownership of their learning.

This is the story of why Gameful exists–and how it can help you transform learning in your classroom

Built by teachers for teachers.

Built in Classrooms, Not Boardrooms

Gameful began with an unlikely source of inspiration: a graduate school assignment.

While pursuing a Master’s degree in Education, Mike Noble was required to play World of Warcraft as part of a course exploring learning and motivation. At the time, he wasn’t a gamer. But as he played, he became fascinated by what kept millions of people engaged for hours at a time. The game offered clear goals, meaningful choices, visible progress, social connection, and a constant sense of discovery.

Mike walked away with two realizations. First, he had become a gamer himself. Second, he became convinced that education had something important to learn from well-designed games.

Back in his classroom, he began experimenting with gameful learning alongside his students. Together they created quests, maps, progression systems, and learning experiences designed to foster autonomy, curiosity, and mastery. The results were remarkable. Students weren’t just completing assignments—they were exploring, creating, collaborating, and taking ownership of their learning.

One of the people hearing these stories was fellow educator Mick McMurray.

For years, Mike shared examples of what he and his students were building, but Mick remained skeptical. Much of what passed for gamification seemed focused on points, prizes, and token economies. Influenced by Self-Determination Theory, he worried that external rewards could undermine the intrinsic motivation that meaningful learning depends on.

Still, Mike’s classroom kept producing results that were difficult to ignore. What finally changed Mick’s mind wasn’t a theory or a research paper—it was the students.

Some of Mike’s students began building the earliest versions of the platform while they were still in high school. At the time, Mick didn’t know how to code, but he was inspired by what these students were creating and by the learning experiences that made such work possible. What started as a classroom project demonstrated that students were capable of far more than most educational systems asked of them.

Eventually, curiosity won out. Mick began experimenting with gameful learning himself and discovered that the most powerful aspects had little to do with points or badges. The real impact came from autonomy, meaningful choice, visible progress, rapid feedback, and giving students opportunities to pursue learning in personally meaningful ways.

As the project grew, Mick learned to code and eventually took over development of the platform, transforming it from a collection of classroom experiments into a flexible learning system that could be used by educators everywhere.

Over the years, teachers from around the world contributed ideas, feedback, and classroom-tested improvements. What started with a graduate school assignment, a classroom experiment, and a handful of ambitious students evolved into a platform shaped by countless educators and learners.

Today, Gameful continues to be developed by educators who still teach. Every feature, every workflow, and every design decision is guided by a simple question:

How can we create learning experiences that students want to explore?
